Ray Howard-Jones: Welsh Artist of War, Mosaics, Islands & Wild Coast

12 Oct 23 - 12 Oct 23

David Moore will talk about the life and work of Ray Howard-Jones (1903-1996), the renowned Welsh woman war artist, sea painter, mosaicist, community theatre pioneer, poet and Christian mystic who had a deep association with the Pembrokeshire coast, particularly around Marloes. She is the subject of his fully illustrated biography, recently published by Bird Eye Books, an imprint of Graffeg, which represents many years of research in both public and private collections.

David has worked as a curator for Welsh museums and galleries for many years. After a spell as a volunteer at the Ceredigion Museum, he worked for Pembrokeshire Museums in the 1980s, when he met Ray, then became curator of Brecknock Museum, Brecon, for 12 years, establishing its art gallery. These are now part of y Gaer cultural centre. He built up its reputation for showing exhibitions by Welsh artists and formed a significant regional art collection with the support of a trust. In recent years he has, independently, concentrated on writing about Welsh artists, artist groups and public art collections. In 2020 Graffeg published Art for Wales, his book exploring 25 years of the Derek Williams Trust’s extensive support for the post-1900 art collection at Amgueddfa Cymru.
